NJ Transit Problems Caused By Lack Of Available Engineers

New Jersey Transit is suffering from what some are calling "chronic cancellations."

Transit officials say nearly two dozen trains a day have been canceled last minute in the past few weeks because there are not enough railroad engineers. Governor Phil Murphy said the engineer shortage is due to budget cuts during the Christie administration.

"These cancellations speak to an extreme lack of certified and trained engineers and also to the damaging defunding of NJ Transit through Governor Christe's term," Murphy said Thursday.

According to the governor, a war room mentality will be adopted to fix the rail system and nine new engineers will start next week. NJ Transit officials said the testing of a new braking system and vacation season have also impacted engineer availability.
