Conference set to empower New Yorkers hit by extreme weather

The state is holding a storm recovery conference to give New Yorkers the opportunity to help communities rebuild from catastrophic damage caused by major natural disasters over the past two years.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo is hosting the "New York Rising Storm Recovery Conference" being held Thursday at Hart Auditorium in the Empire State Plaza in downtown Albany.

The conference will focus on the launch of Cuomo's New York Rising Communities program. The program is designed to empower New Yorkers who have been hit by extreme weather events, including Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee in the summer of 2011 and Superstorm Sandy last fall.

The gathering comes as some communities in the Mohawk Valley are still recovering from severe flooding caused by heavy rains in late June.
