NY Women's Agenda Derailed in NY Over Abortion

The women's coalition that had demanded all 10 measures splintered.

A series of major bills that would protect women's rights at work, at home and when they face domestic violence was derailed last night over a contentious late-term abortion proposal, which even its ardent supporters said wouldn't change abortion practices.

When it became clear the abortion piece would sink the other nine elements, the women's coalition that had demanded all 10 measures for months splintered.

Even Family Planning Advocates, an abortion rights group, urged the Assembly late in the night to take up the nine measures passed by the Senate hours earlier.

The Senate passed the nine measures as stand alone bills addressing pay equity, discrimination and human trafficking, but the Republican conference blocked the abortion measure.
