NYC Announces Winner of Tiny Housing Competition

First micro-unit apartment building will be built on East 27th St.

New York City's redefining apartment living.

The city announced on Tuesday the winner of a competition that asked designers to develop mini apartments aimed at young singles. The units range in size from 250 to 370 square feet -- about the size of a single car garage.

The team of Monadnock Development, Actors Fund Housing Development Corporation and nARCHITECTS were picked to construct the micro-unit apartment building.

Mayor Bloomberg says this new pilot project challenges current housing limits.

"Those units were created decades ago for a different time and a very different population.  We think that by tweaking those limits we can pave the way for the development of many more studio and one bedroom apartments."

The first teeny apartments will be built at 335 East 27th Street.  Forty percent of the 55 new units will be set aside for low and middle-income New Yorkers. The units are expected to be move-in ready by the end of 2015.
