NYC Lawmaker Wants Paid Sick-Leave for Organ Donors

A New York City lawmaker wants to increase the number of organ donors in the City.

City Council Member Costa Constantinides introduced a bill today that would allow organ donors to take paid sick-leave for their procedures. He says that would encourage more people to register as organ donors.

"They're looking for people that may want to give the gift of life to a fellow New Yorker," says Constantinides. "This one, removes a barrier, a feeling they may get fired, or may lose pay by taking time. And then secondly, it raises awareness, allows people to understand what organ donation is all about.

Constantinides says 10,000 New York State residents are currently waiting for an organ donation. He also says only 24% of New Yorkers are registered donors. Residents can now sign up to become organ donors on voter registration forms.
