NYC Picks Taxi of Tomorrow

New York City says the "taxi of tomorrow" will offer passengers a better and safer ride.

A mini-van from Nissan will first hit the streets in late 2013, equipped with many features existing cabs lack.

Mayor Bloomberg said the NV200 van will have passenger airbags, sliding passenger doors, and exterior lighting to help improve safety.  He also said each taxi will have a navigational GPS on board.  “The days of drivers claiming to ‘not know’ how to get to any destination, anywhere, in the city will be over” said the mayor.

The taxis will also include USP ports so riders would be able to charge their electronics like cell phones, iPads, and laptops.

Nissan beat out Ford and Karsan USA  to design and supply the new taxis.
