Peter Scolari and Tracy Shayne: A Bronx Bombers Marriage

Married actors discuss playing Yogi and Carmen Berra

Bronx Bombers is the latest sports drama from producers Fran Kirmser and Tony Ponturo, the team responsible for 2012’s Magic/Bird and 2011’s Lombardi.

I got a chance to interview the producers, director, and entire cast in December at Bronx Bombers media day.

This is the fourth of four articles highlighting different interviews from that day in preparation for the play’s opening night.

Monday featured producers Fran Kirmser and Tony Ponturo as well as writer-director Eric Simonson

Tuesday featured actors Francois Battiste (Reggie Jackson and Elston Howard), Bill Dawes (Therman Munson, Mickey Mantle), and Keith Nobbs (Billy Martin).

Wednesday featured actors C.J. Wilson (Babe Ruth), John Wernke (Lou Gehrig), Chris Henry Coffee (Joe DiMaggio), and Christopher Jackson (Derek Jeter).

The show opens today, Thursday, February 6th , at Broadway’s Circle in the Square Theater.

I interviewed couple and lead actors Peter Scolari (Girls, Bosom Buddies) and Tracy Shayne about translating their real marriage into one on stage. We discussed meeting Yogi and Carmen Berra, what their research process was like, and the dynamic that Carmen Berra brings into a play dominated by male performers.
