Construction begins to pump roughly 3.5 million cubic yards of sand along Rockaway Beach in Queens.

Waves crashing on Rockaway Beach in Queens are going to be tough to hear for awhile above the din of noisy bulldozers.

They're placing about 3.5 million cubic yards of sand along the shoreline to replace sand lost during Superstorm Sandy.  Mayor Bloomberg joined the United States Army Corps of Engineers to announce the beginning of Phase One this morning.  He recalled walking the beach last October after it was devastated by the hurricane.

"It was just so sad to see something that was so beautiful so torn apart."

Bloomberg says the restored beach will be equipped with even more sand than it had before the storm, providing the community with better protection from flooding.  Phase One's expected to wrap up by Memorial Day.
