Postgame Report: URI 66 Fordham 68
Estwick Leads Fordham over U.R.I.
These days, Tom Pecora mantras are about all that run through the Rose Hill Gym more frequently than Ram victories. One of his favorites: “You’re only as good as your seniors.” Well that’s exactly how good the maroon and white were this evening as they rode a season-high performance from Alberto Estwick to their first conference victory of the season, defeating Rhode Island 66-64 in the Bronx.
The senior from Brooklyn capped off his improbable evening with a three-pointer from the corner in front of his team’s bench to give Fordham a two-point lead with 28 seconds left in the game. Shortly after the shot stroked the bottom of the net, I realized a few stunning breakthroughs. Previously, Estwick’s season-high point total was seven. Tonight, he netted 18. His seven made field goals more than doubled his previous season-high of three, and his four three-point buckets marked the first game this season in which he connected on more than one basket from beyond the arc.
Estwick, however, was not alone in delivering Fordham’s seventh home victory of the year. Brandon Frazier registered 19 points to go with three rebounds, six assists, and a steal. The sophomore guard was right in the middle of things down the stretch as he assisted on Estwick’s game-winner and nailed a triple of his own to bring the Rams within one point with three minutes left in the game.
Fordham was without their leading scorer for the entire second half. Chris Gaston was ejected from the game with 1:03 remaining in the opening period after committing a flagrant foul under the basket. The A-10 will review the play tomorrow and decide whether the infraction warrants further punishment. Before being thrown out, Gaston played 13 minutes, scored two points, and grabbed two rebounds.
Fordham trailed 19-8 at the 12:41 mark in the first half before outscoring Rhode Island 32-19 over the remainder of the period. Billy Baron led all scorers with 22 points on 7-13 shooting.
Fordham will travel to Olean, NY for a bout with St. Bonaventure on Saturday. The game starts at 2:00 and you can hear the game on 90.7 FM and WFUV.org beginning with the pregame report at 1:55.
