Hurricane Maria damage in Puerto Rico on a hillside

A year after Hurricane Maria tore through Puerto Rico, a non-profit organization is leading an effort to demand more attention for the storm ravaged island.

Frankie Miranda, the Executive Vice President at the Hispanic Federation, is in San Juan commemorating the one year anniversary of Maria. As his plane descended on the island, Miranda says he saw a sea of blue tarps signifying homes that still have damage. Miranda says tourist areas may look like all is back to normal, but in certain areas Puerto Ricans still struggle with access to clean water, power, and jobs.

He thinks the U.S. government is not doing enough to help restoration efforts.

FEMA has just awarded another 49.3 million dollars towards hurricane related expenses, bringing the total for relief efforts to 3.7 billion dollars to date.
