Ben Hopkins and Liv Bruce started the band PWR BTTM just a couple of years ago in college. Since that time, they’ve released two EPs and the full-length debut album, Ugly Cherries. While their sound is rooted in punk with a good deal of humor, perhaps more significant is their impact and ascension in the discussion of gender identity and building community around it.

That’s not to suggest that this is a “heavy” band, content-wise. Quite the opposite in fact. As we got a taste of at SXSW this year, PWR BTTM's live performances are incredibly fun and it translated into their Studio A session too.

I talked with Ben and Liv about their songwriting differences, their influence on those experiencing gender bias and what their next move is. Check out great live versions of “West Texas,” “Serving Goffman” and a new one called “New Hampshire.”
