NFL commissioner talks to media in New York City.

NFL commissioner Rodger Goodell delivered his annual state of the NFL speech in New York City on Friday.

The commissioner started by talking about Super Bowl XLVIII, which features the Denver Broncos against the Seattle Seahawks. The game is the first Super Bowl played outdoors in a cold weather climate.

“I think people are feeling the excitement and the energy and that’s a great thing for us,” Goodell said. “That’s what football is all about, that’s what the Super Bowl is all about.”

The NFL commissioner touched on numerous topics, including a concussion lawsuit and medicinal marijuana for players. Goodell said the NFL will look into whether or not marijuana has positive health benefits before making a decision on allowing the substance.

Goodell also discussed expanding the NFL internationally. A few games have been played in the United Kingdom in front of sold out crowds, and he said the NFL wants to continue to bring the game to European fans.

“We’re always interested in expanding our game, our focus has been in the UK,” Goodell said. “We’re seeing that kind of passion and excitement about football on a global basis.”
