Russia and China Veto Sanctions on Syria

Russia and China have vetoed a United Nations resolution that would've imposed sanctions on Syria over the alleged use of chemical weapons.

This is the seventh time Russia has vetoed a U.N. Security Council resolution on the Syrian conflict.  The resolution would've imposed sanctions on 21 Syrian individuals, organizations, and companies allegedly involved in chemical weapons attacks.  The resolution came after an investigation found the Syrian government was behind at least three attacks involving chlorine gas.

U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Nikki Haley condemned the council's decision.  She said Russia and China are protecting a brutal regime.

"It is a sad day on the Security Council when members start making excuses for other member states killing their own people," she said.

But Russian Deputy Ambassador the U.N. Vladimir Safronkov said the resolution a political move to undermine the Assad regime.
