Season Wrap-up with Coach Tom Pecora
Mike Watts, WFUV Sports
Fordham Men's Basketball Coach Tom Pecora joined Alex Smith and Matt Sinise from Albany, New York and the high school state tournament. The interview, which occured during the Fordham Focus segment, was the season wrap up for the Rams head coach.
Coach Pecora told Alex and Matt about his recruiting efforts both in the States and abroad and about how the addition of Tom Parrotta to his staff effects Fordham's foreign recruiting efforts. He spoke about adding a couple recruits for next year, and how they may fit into an exciting Fordham front court.
Moving to the schedule for upcoming years, Pecora is looking at playing 15-18 games at the Rose Hill Gymnasium each year instead of a road heavy schedule like what the Rams struggled through last season. The third year coach also described the "bittersweet" feeling of breaking the road conference losing streak, but doing it in the final game of the season.
The Rams leader talked about just how good the five Atlantic 10 conference representatives in the NCAA were this season, including recent defectors Xavier and Butler, who have joined the new Big East. He talked about the Atlantic 10 moving forward, saying that some teams could be added, but that the "monster" of a conference will be strong regardless. Pecora also spoke about the postseason success of non-conference opponents Robert Morris (who defeated defending national champion Kentucky in the first round of the NIT), Mississippi, and Harvard among others.
Finally, Alex asked Coach Pecora about Chris Gaston's move to Puerto Rico's highest professional league. He told Alex and Matt that he coached two of Gaston's new teammates while he was at Hofstra, and preached maturity to his senior forward, who will finish classes in the Bronx before returning to Puerto Rico to continue his professional basketball career.
