Sen. Blumenthal Calls for Food Safety Agency

Food safety is under the jurisdiction of 15 federal agencies. That's why some lawmakers are pushing to consolidate.  Connecticut Senator Richard Blumenthal says having food safety under multiple agencies make the government less effective and hurts accountability for recalls.

"There is a tangled, bureaucratic web that prevents effective action against food contamination,  which can kill," Blumenthal said.

But Health and Human Services and the Department of Agriculture have said collaboration is working.  If a new agency is created, it'll face start-up costs and staffing changes.
