Stephanie Gaitley Show (2/5)
It has been 18 years since the Fordham Rams Women’s Basketball program had a winning season. Sunday’s 30-point victory over VCU guaranteed that the Maroon and White will be over .500 for the first time since the 1994-1995 season. Fordham now has five wins in the Atlantic 10, matching the most that any Rams team has ever had in conference play. This is just one of the many reasons why second year coach Stephanie Gaitley is smiling about her team.
On this week’s edition of the podcast, Mike Watts and I talked with the head coach about the thrashing of VCU, tomorrow’s matchup against La Salle and the big game on Sunday against the nationally ranked Dayton Flyers. Gaitley stressed that her team must continue to remain focused on one game at a time. The head coach reminded us that nothing comes easy in the Atlantic 10, especially this year with 5 teams already over the 5 win mark in conference. The former St. Joe’s coach told the program that she’s also excited to see some familiar faces in her old stomping grounds of Philadelphia.
We were also joined this week by sophomores Emily Tapio and Christina Gaskin. Tapio has missed 12 games with a foot injury while Gaskin has been sidelined for the last 10 contests with an illness. The two forwards told us that they are close to returning to action and can’t wait to contribute. It’s been particularly hard for Tapio to watch from the bench since she was playing major minutes prior to injury. However, the Brewster native applauded the growth that freshman center Samantha Clark has made over the past few months.
It should be an interesting week for the Fordham Rams who are now 15-6 overall and 5-1 in the Atlantic 10. Coach Gaitley’s squad returns to the hardwood tomorrow night at La Salle University. Catch all the action right here on WFUVSports.org starting at 6:55pm. Then join us on Sunday February 10th when Fordham hosts Dayton at 2pm. Our coverage begins at 1:55pm.
