The Fordham Rams will continue their magical 2012-2013 campaign at the Barclays Center this Saturday night at 7PM against the Saint Joseph’s Hawks in the Atlantic 10 Women's Basketball Championship Game. After finishing the regular season at 22-7 and adding two more victories in the conference tournament, it is safe to say that this team exceeded outside expectations. Throughout the year, the Rams have surpassed various milestones with the latest being an Atlantic 10 semi-final appearance, a semi-final victory, not to mention their head coach picking up her 500th career win. Not too bad for a team that was ranked number eleven in the A10’s pre-season poll.
When they take the hardwood this Saturday, they will be going up against a Hawks squad that took down #11/#11 Dayton their last time out. Saint Joe's is currently projected as a 9 seed in the NCAA Tournament by ESPN, but lost to Fordham by 7 points in overtime just a few weeks ago.
Coming off a bye in the first round of the A-10 Tournament, the Rams handled Saint Louis with ease on Saturday night, and beat Temple by eleven the following day. In those two games, Fordham’s five starters account for 128 of the teams 131 points. The team has relied on great defense, timely shooting, and nonstop effort all season long to get to where they are today. Those pillars were crucial again to earn a conference tournament finals berth.
A win this weekend would secure the team an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, and a conference title for the first time in school history as a member of the A10.
This week on the Stephanie Gaitley Show, Coach Gaitley talked about how surreal of an experience it was to achieve these milestones in front of friends and family at Hagan Arena. In just her second season at the helm of this unit, she has overachieved higher than anybody could’ve predicted. She spoke about the matchup with Saint Joe’s and the first time that these two teams squared off in the regular season. It was an excited Stephanie Gaitley in the WFUV Studios and one who is certainly not content with simply playing for a championship, this Fordham group expects to win.
We also had a chance to speak with Freshman Forward Sam Clark, and Senior Guard Arielle Collins. Both were excited about the opportunity at hand and ready to take on Saint Joseph’s this coming Saturday. While most college students will be returning home from a variety of spring break locations, the Rams will venture into the endless black and white that makes up Brooklyn’s Barclays Center.
