Street Closures Coming this Summer

Temporary pedestrian malls this coming August will be expanded.

Temporary street closures are coming to New York City this summer.

Transportation Commissioner Polly Trottenberg announced the expansion of three different car-free street programs today.

The "Summer Streets" pedestrian zone will run from the Brooklyn Bridge up Lafayette Street and Park Avenue, up to 72nd Street. This pedestrian zone will feature acitivities like rock climbing, musical performances, and even a zipline. The Summer Streets closures will take place on August 2nd, 9th, and 16th, from 7:00 AM to 1:00 PM.

"Weekend Walks" will occur on a smaller scale in neighborhoods throughout the boroughs.

The third pedestrian zone program will be a closure of all north-south roads in Central Park north of 72nd Street. These roads will close to cars from June 27th to Labor Day.

Trottenberg says the pedestrian zones are an important part of summer in the city.

"Last year over 300,000 people attended, and I predict this year we're going to have even more people," said Trottenberg of the Summer Streets program.
