Strike A Chord: Taking a LEAP!

Michael Lichter lost his leg in a truck accident while moving his grandma to Florida. He says after the accident, and becoming an amputee, he felt lost and didn’t want to go to a support group to cry about his problems.

A few years later, a friend, and fellow amputee, convinced him to go to one group session at the NYU Langone amputee program called LEAP! He says after attending the program, he found more solace in his physical loss.

“That LEAP! group really helped me realize that everything I had to do was just going to be a little bit more time, it was just going to be adaptive, and that things were going to be okay.”

Lichter is now mentoring a nineteen year old who recently lost his leg in a motorcycle accident.

“I’m just going to bet here for him, to make sure that he knows that I’m not going to give up on him, that life is for the living, and that just because you’re missing a leg, that doesn’t mean that there’s not still life to live.”
