Today's Clearwater Artist: Nicole Atkins
Celebrating Clearwater Artists: Nicole Atkins
Nicole Atkins is an enormously talented artist who quickly became a favorite at WFUV. From the very first time we heard her song "The Way It Is," we knew that Nicole was special – and judging by the way WFUV listeners have embraced Nicole, it's safe to say that we are all in agreement. Possessing a powerful voice and songwriting ability to match, Nicole is poised to become one of popular music's brightest talents.
Nicole is a Jersey girl. She was born and raised in Neptune Township and attended high school in nearby Belmar. Her debut album, Neptune City, was recorded in Sweden with the assistance of her band the Sea, and it was released in the fall of 2007. One of the album's many highlights was the majestic "The Way It Is." Unfortunately, by the time Nicole started working on material for her sophmore effort, her backing band had split. As recording sessions progressed, a new band came together, who Nicole dubbed the Black Sea. In early 2011, the second album, Mondo Amore, emerged. That was recorded in Brooklyn and featured favorites like "Cry Cry Cry" and "Vultures." Earlier this year, Nicole issued her latest long player, Slow Phaser. Like Neptune City, Slow Phaser was recorded in Sweden. Like Mondo Amore, Slow Phaser finds Nicole testing the waters of change in an attempt to create a work that is different from what has come before.
This year's Clearwater audience will not want to miss one of WFUV's favorites, Nicole Atkins. The Nicole Atkins Band will perform at the Clearwater Festival on Saturday, June 21.
