There's no way around it: this has been an agonizing week. In the aftermath of national tragedies in Las Vegas and Puerto Rico, attempting to cobble together an hour-long show of British music felt particularly hard this week. Yes, we know that music can heal — but more importantly, it should also serve as a catalyst of transformation and change.

So on UKNY tonight at 11, a few songs that sometimes harshly or more obliquely comment on the chaotic world we've wrought, from Everything Everything, Shopping, and Benjamin Clementine. And since this troubled year has also produced some extraordinary albums or songs, excellent new releases from Wolf Alice, the Weather Station's Tamara Lindeman, and Nilüfer Yanya.

The shocking loss of Tom Petty this week felt especially cruel too — and I'll slip in my favorite song of his that was actually written for someone else.
