Hear an Alternate Side in Session with Until The Ribbon Breaks.

There's a dystopian undertow to Until The Ribbon Breaks' first album, A Lesson Unlearnt, but the trio's genre-blurring debut is far from dour or dire. Cardiff-born, Los Angeles-based Pete Lawrie-Winfield and bandmates Elliot Wall and James Gordon have deftly mixed hues of soulful R&B, pop, muscular hip-hop, atmospheric electronica and dance rock into a heady brew. That Jackson Pollock-style approach of aggressively splattering a sonic canvas with bold influences and ideas has served the group well: Until The Ribbon Breaks got a major break touring with Lorde last year, they're on the road with London Grammar this winter, and they've opened for red-hot rappers Run The Jewels too.

In fact, Until The Ribbon Breaks collaborated with Run the Jewels on the wiry track "Revolution Indifference" for A Lesson Unlearnt. The trio also recruited New York's own Homeboy Sandman for "Perspective," but when Until The Ribbon Breaks visited Studio A this fall, the Queens rapper wasn't available. Nevertheless, they were still able to play a "solo" version of "Perspective" (accessorized with a few dance moves) as well as their single, "A Taste of Silver."

Lawrie-Winfield also discussed the cinematic roots of the record—he's a former film student who reveres director Terrence Malick and others—as well as the socio-political sway of his lyrics.
