With an album title like Darling Arithmetic, you might not expect an emotionally intimate, and pure collection of love songs, but for his follow up to the “flights of fancy” and electronic-tinged songs of Awayland, indie-folk artist Conor O’Brien, aka Villagers, set out to dig deep, and write “more from the heart than the head”. In his recent visit to Studio A, Conor’s newfound openness was on display, both in his performance and conversation. As he shared songs from the new album, he discussed the road to discovering that the more of himself he put in his music, the more universally relatable they became. And while there was nothing calculated about Darling Arithmetic, Villagers has accomplished what he set out to do: he gave us an album with open arms.
