The Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show is Coming to New York City Once Again

Next month, New York will once again be overrun by our canine companions. That's because the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show is back in town, and this year, it's welcoming seven new breeds.

Some of the dogs joining this year have been popular in Europe for a while. The Spanish Water Dog and the Bergamasco both hail from European shores. The competition will be held next month, but the new breeds were shown off for the first time today at Madison Square Garden.

Gail Bisher is the Director of Communications for the Westminster Kennel Club. She said dog lovers in the United States are gaining a new interest in these breeds.

"Most of them are very ancient breeds. They're just well-known in other parts of the world," she said. "They're new and gaining popularity in the United States."

Bisher says there'll be over 3,000 dogs competing in three different competitions. The finals will be on February 15 and 16 at Madison Square Garden.
