Yankees Help Give Animals New Beginnings

HOPE Week trip to animal rescue shelter in Bronx brings one player close to pet adoption

Did Yankees hurler Shawn Kelley have enough dogs already? Probably. Did that mean he didn't consider adopting another? Not one bit.

That was the power of the Yankees' trip to New Beginnings Animal Rescue Wednesday in the Bronx on the afternoon of their game aganst the Kansas City Royals. Kelley, Brett Gardner, and Ichiro Suzuki lent a hand to Pedro Rosario, the kennel's founder, in interacting with and bathing some dogs and cats.

"It was really just nice to meet him and see he's devoted his life to such a great cause...hopefully we can help him out," Gardner said.

The team didn't stop there; they invited him down to the stadium to spread awareness about his cause. He watched the Yankees take BP and picked up some autographs along the way (see gallery below), then trotted out to the mound to throw out the first pitch. The Bombers proceeded to donate $10,000 to his cause and give him the chance to pass out volunteer and adoption forms.

The story of just how Pedro got here is a long and special one. But no chapter may prove to be greater than the one written on a warm, sunny Bronx day at the Stadium.
