WFUV Continues its 2005 Awards Streak

Music-formatted public radio station WFUV continues to win industry accolades for its news and public affairs programming. City Folk® hosts Claudia Marshall and Dennis Elsas and WFUV's News & Public Affairs directors Julianne Welby and George Bodarky have each contributed several awards to the station's accumulation of some twenty awards in just the first six months of 2005.

The New York State Broadcasters Association has honored WFUV's staff with two awards.

  • Jen Guerra, AngieLyn Hamilton-Lowe and Julianne Welby won Best Public Affairs Program Series for "Subculture."
  • Dennis Elsas and George Bodarky won Best Commentary, Editorial or Documentary for "It Was 40 Years Ago Today: The Beatles Invade America."

"Subculture" and "It Was 40 Years Ago Today: The Beatles Invade America" have both been big award winners this year. "Subculture" also recently won WFUV its first ever National Edward R. Murrow Award from the Radio and Television News Directors Association. Yesterday, the Beatles documentary earned Elsas and Bodarky the New York Festivals' Bronze World Medal in the category of Culture and the Arts.

At its Annual Journalism Awards ceremony, the New York Press Club honored City Folk Morning Host Claudia Marshall with its Consumer Award for her story "Ultimate Ears." Earlier this year, Marshall received a New York Achievement in Radio award for Best News Interview.

This June, WFUV took four Special Mentions in the professional category at the New York State Associated Press Broadcasters Association Awards.

  • George Bodarky and WFUV News Team won a Special Mention, Best News Special or Documentary for "Working the Night Shift"
  • George Bodarky won a Special Mention, Best Feature for "Second Avenue Subway"
  • Mike Moriaty and Nick Andrusisian won a Special Mention, Best Sports Coverage for "Pilgrimage to Pocono"
  • George Bodarky won a Special Mention, General Excellence in Use of Medium for "Singing Sanitation Worker"

WFUV's student staff has also contributed to the award streak.

  • On June 7, WFUV's student staff was named National Finalists in the category of Radio Daily Newscast by The Society of Professional Journalists Mark of Excellence Awards.
  • On June 11, the New York State Associated Press Broadcasters Association awarded Fordham University student Shane D'Aprile with the Best Newscast award and fellow student Jonathan Vigliotti with the Best News Story award for his Cityscape piece "Work Addiction."
  • Also in June, Fordham University student Scott Detrow won a Public Radio News Directors Incorporated Award in the category of Spot News and a $500 scholarship for his "Surprise U2 Concert" report, while Jonathan Vigliotti won a second award for Best Newscaster.

"We're grateful to find that WFUV's student staff is being recognized for its efforts alongside the professional staff. Julianne Welby and George Bodarky devote a lot of time to mentoring students in the newsroom and the students have responded with consistently first-rate reporting. We're also pleased that a music station is gaining such wide recognition for its excellence in news and public affairs programming," said WFUV General Manager Ralph Jennings.
