Roll Out Those Lazy Hazy Days

August 2005We're well into the lazy days of summer as August begins, but we've got an action-packed newsletter and a bunch of special themes and featured artists to keep you entertained at 90.7 FM and wfuv.org.

You Won't Want to Miss

On Friday, August 5, it's our yearly Newport Folk Festival preview, with music from artists performing at this year's festival, including Elvis Costello, the Pixies, Ray Lamontagne, Emmylou Harris, and more. Monday, August 8, we'll have music from Richard Thompson (including a special encore of his recent City Folk Live broadcast at 1 pm). Other featured artists include Joe Jackson on August 11, as he turns 50 (can you believe it?), Ry Cooder on August 17, and Van Morrison on August 31, the day he hits the big 6-0!

Richard Thompson Takes The WFUV 'Pop Quiz'

Speaking of Richard Thompson, we subjected him to the "The WFUV Pop Quiz," our answer to the Bernard Pivot Questionnaire which James Lipton uses on "Inside The Actors Studio." John Platt interrogated the veteran singer-songwriter during his City Folk Live concert at the Cutting Room on June 30, and Richard replied with his tongue firmly in cheek.

Dennis Elsas: Five Years and Counting

When afternoon host Dennis Elsas joined the FUV family in August, 2000, he couldn't have predicted what a good fit it would be. Now, 1200 shows later, as he prepares for his fifth anniversary show on Monday, August 15, Dennis recalls some of his favorite moments of the first five years at WFUV.

Gettin' Down With FUV

Hundreds of WFUV members joined us for an evening of big fun on Friday, July 22 at Satalla. City Folk hosts took turns providing the upbeat tunes while folks ate, drank, mingled and made their way out to the floor for their favorite songs. You missed out? Check out their song lists and some behind-the-scenes photos here. And you too can get on the list for events like this one with your annual WFUV membership contribution.

From Corn Country to The Big Apple

Since Dianne Harms moved to New York from Iowa a year ago to become WFUV's membership director, the greeting she tends to get from New Yorkers is "culture shock!" But, because of the way New York culture spills out everywhere, Dianne maintains that a New Yorker moving to Iowa would experience greater culture shock than an Iowan who moves here -- and she's got a reading list to prove it!

For WFUV Members Only

Rock and roll and Latin (the dead language, not the musical genre) come together in the smart opening track of the new Erin McKeown CD, We Will Become Like Birds. WFUV Members can sign in here to hear a live version of "Aspera."

    Sports Math: 1 + 1 = 30

To celebrate the thirtieth anniversary of the One on One (Saturdays 1-4 pm), New York City's longest running sports call-in show, the student-produced and -hosted program is inviting some accomplished alumni to return as special guests. Coming up on Aug. 20 are Charlie Slowes, voice of the Washington Nationals, and Rich Coutinho, VP, on-air Operations for IFC and NY sports reporter for the Associated Press. Then on August 27 it's Connell McShane, Bloomberg Radio morning anchor, and Charles Costello. One on One also goes on the road this month, broadcasting live from the Giants-Jets scrimmage in Albany on August 6, and from the PGA Championship at Baltusrol on August 13.

Don't forget to wear a hat, always check your tire pressure before hitting the road, and watch out for those festival-wristband tan lines...
