September Songs and So Much More
Summer may be coming to a close, but WFUV's still got the tunes to keep you going through the back-to-school and back-to-work days ahead. And we send out love and music to the hurricane-ravaged folks in New Orleans and the Gulf Coast.
You Won't Want to Miss
As one way of showing our support for the victims of Hurricane Katrina, we'll be featuring New Orleans music throughout the day on Friday, September 2. On September 6, Coldplay is our featured artist throughout the day, as they begin a two-night gig at Madison Square Garden (Gwyneth alert!), and on September 13, we're putting the spotlight on the great Bonnie Raitt, who has a brand new CD. B.B. King celebrates his 80th birthday (!) on September 16, so you'll get a chance to hear him (and Lucille) all day long.
We're also cooking up some special live broadcasts for you: Newgrass band Nickel Creek performs live from the Living Room in Manhattan just for WFUV on September 22, and high-energy duo The Kennedys bring you a special live show from Fordham University on September 27.
The Newport Report
A lot of the WFUV family, both staff and listeners, made the annual pilgrimage to Rhode Island for the Dunkin' Donuts Newport Folk Festival in the beginning of August. By all accounts it was a great weekend. We've got some behind-the-scenes photos (okay, we have MANY photos) and observations from Rita Houston and others. Highlights and goofy captions guaranteed.
What Gets Dar Dancing?
It's a big month for one of our FUV 'faves - singer/songwriter Dar Williams. Her new CD, My Better Self, gets released on September 13, and she'll be returning to Town Hall in NYC on Thursday, September 29 at 8pm with special guest Girlyman.
Dar bravely allowed John Platt to give her the James Lipton treatment and took the WFUV Pop Quiz. Find out what CD she puts on when she wants to dance and other inside stuff. (You can hear John's interview with Dar on the City Folk Sunday Breakfast on September 18 between 8-11am.)
Feeling lucky? WFUV is giving you the chance to grab some of the best seats in the house for Dar's Town Hall concert. Check wfuv.org Monday through Wednesday, September 12-14 (not yet, come back) for your chance to win a pair of tickets, front and center for this great show! (Tickets are on sale now - yes, now - through Ticketmaster and at the Town Hall Box Office.)
For WFUV Members Only
Thanks again, Dar - WFUV members can sign in here for a sneak preview of "Teen for God," performed live in Studio A.
Note from New Orleans
While we all open our hearts to the people of New Orleans as they cope with the catastrophe of Hurricane Katrina, we want to share this letter from Nick Spitzer, the host and producer of American Routes, which is produced in the Crescent City.
Party On!
A wonderful time was had by all at WFUV's annual Volunteer Picnic on Thursday, August 18 on the Keating Hall Terrace. If you become one of the beautiful people who help us out by answering phones October 29 through November 6, you, too, can be invited to our next volunteer party!
And speaking of the fall membership drive, if you're not an FUV member yet, what are you waiting for? Contribute today!
Adventures in Uganda
Earlier this year, WFUV's assistant program director Tara Anderson traveled to Uganda, while her doctor husband spent a month working at a regional hospital. She came back with vivid memories - and stunning photos - of a colorful country where the people are friendly, the roads filled with animals, and the sunsets spectacular.
With a moment of silence for a great music city...
- Your friends at WFUV
