January, 2008Leaping into 2008

We're welcoming the new year and Natalie Merchant to town on January 3 with a day of her music in the spotlight. With John Prine coming to Carnegie Hall, we're featuring his stellar songwriting throughout the day on January 4. It's not every day that there's a new album from a former Beatle, but January 15 brings us a new one from Ringo Starr - and we'll celebrate with Ringo's music that day. On January 17, we put the spotlight on the sometimes-enigmatic, always-intriguing Cat Power. Lucinda Williams turns 55 years old on January 24 (hard to believe, huh?) and we're throwing the party - you'll hear Lucinda throughout the day. We're thrilled to present a live broadcast with The Blind Boys of Alabama from the Cutting Room on the evening of January 28. And as two veteran (although very different) performers return with new albums, we'll put them both in the spotlight: Joe Jackson on January 29, and Sheryl Crow on January 31.

Welcome to the Weekend on 'FUV 24/7

Have you checked out 'FUV 24/7 yet? It's our new program service which brings you our signature music mix all day and all night seven days a week. You can hear it online at wfuv.org and, in the New York area, on an HD radio as WFUV-HD2 at 90.7 FM . Meet 'FUV 24/7's new weekend hosts - Russ Borris, Sarah Wardrop, Ben Jones, and Alisa Ali - a lively crew who are passionate about their musical favorites, the same ones you hear during the week. (Of course, WFUV's regular weekend programming continues to air on the same schedule at 90.7 FM and online as WFUV On-Air.)

From Lily Allen to The Swell Season, here are some new artists, handpicked by the WFUV air staff, to keep an eye (and ear) out for in the coming year: New Artist Review.

Holiday Cheer for 'FUV - We Got Pictures!

Our third annual Holiday Cheer for 'FUV benefit concert on December 13th at the New York Society for Ethical Culture was a heartwarming affair on a nasty winter night. Our thanks to Suzanne Vega, Odetta, Madeleine Peyroux, Dan Wilson, and Loudon Wainwright for a magical evening, from start to finish. And thanks to all the folks who braved the weather to support WFUV. Check out a slide show of the fun, on and off the stage.

Iron & Wine: A Fortified WFUV Pop Quiz

Bearded, bright, laidback and super cool songwriter Sam Beam, a.k.a. Iron & Wine, visited WFUV this past fall to talk about the band's latest release, The Shepherd's Dog. While he was here, he took the WFUV Pop Quiz with Rita Houston.

New Memberships for the New Year

Friday, January 25 will be our Winter Members Day. This is the time we ask listeners who haven't yet become members to do it NOW! We depend on membership revenue for more than half the funds required to run the station. For those who need a little extra incentive, we'll have some special CD offers for you.

The "mini-drive" will continue through the weekend. Whether you listen to A Thousand Welcomes, Mixed Bag with Pete Fornatale, Vin Scelsa's Idiot's Delight, City Folk Sunday Breakfast, Ceol na nGael, The Big Broadcast - or the newest weekend service, 'FUV 24/7 - remember to support your favorite programs on WFUV.
