Iron & Wine and Mac & Cheese:
Sam Beam Takes the WFUV Pop Quiz
Bearded, bright, laidback and super cool songwriter Sam Beam, a.k.a. Iron & Wine, visited WFUV this past fall to talk about the band's latest release, The Shepherd's Dog. While he was here, he took the WFUV Pop Quiz with host Rita Houston.
What's got you hooked these days? CD? Book? TV show?
D. None of the above.
Which song do you wish you had written, and why?
Le Chic? C'est Chic? "Le Freak," that song is awesome.
Freak out! There it is. Who do you wish had recorded one of your songs, dead or alive?
I always thought Nina Simone had some pretty amazing cover songs. Bob Dylan would be flattering but there's no chance in hell.
What's your favorite song to play at sound check?
We're usually practicing at sound check, trying to figure out what the hell we're going to do.
What song would you sing in the shower but never in public?
"Le Freak," C'est Chic.
What other artist would be the most fun to tour with?
I think we're going to tour with Califone in December, we always have a good time playing with them. We just played with a band called Arthur and You, a new Sub Pop band, that was a lot of fun. They're really good too. I mean there are so many bands nowadays.
Do you cook?
I love to cook.
What's your best dish?
I don't want to disappoint the vegetarians out there, but I like to cook steaks and tenderloins. My wife does some really good African dishes too. My kids have really specific tastes, they're really picky, so usually I just have to cook macaroni and cheese. It's kind of frustrating.
Your skills are being squandered.
It's all going to waste.
What's your favorite sport?
I like to watch soccer, or football, whatever you want to call it. Basketball. I like watching the faster games.
And do you play anything?
No, I used to swim but I got kind of tired of looking at the bottom of the pool, so I don't do that so much anymore.
What wacky thing would you do if you had the time or the guts?
I don't know how wacky I would get. I don't know, stay home.
That is a good answer.
