Events:

WFUV at Newport Folk Festival 2008

We're bringing the festival love from the shoreline, across the airwaves, and right to you.

Stay Tuned:

The Newport Folk Festival

The Newport Folk Fest is an annual pilgrimage for us, and this year we brought some friends from NPR Music along. We broadcasted many of the performances live on Saturday, August 2, and most of the weekend is now available for web streaming on-demand.

Hosted by FUV's Rita Houston and NPR's Bob Boilen

Saturday, August 2:

12:30 PM: Jakob Dylan
1:40 PM: Steve Earle & Alison Moorer
2:50 PM: She & Him (M. Ward & Zooey Deschanel)
4:00 PM: Jim James (of My Morning Jacket)

Sunday, August 3:

11:30 AM: Willie Mason online
12:15 AM: Brandi Carlile online
1:20 PM: Calexico
2:40 PM: Gillian Welch

Notes from our our Promotions Director, Janeen Shaitelman:

I always look forward to the Newport Folk Festival and this year was no different. It was a pretty eclectic lineup over the two days, and it was great that WFUV was able to broadcast some of the sets live on Saturday. Trust me, what we gave you was the BEST of the fest. I was bummed to see the attempt at a seating area on the festival grounds again -- it sits empty all day while the faithful who showed up early have to maneuver around it (those who didn't have $800 for a VIP pass).

Music highlights for me were Jim James, Cat Power, Brandi Carlile, Calexico, and Richie Havens. I was bummed that I missed Richard Julian and the Avett Brothers. We braved a storm on Saturday, but held in there and were treated to an appearance by Damian Marley that left us muddy and happy! My 4-year-old daughter summed it up as the skies cleared, saying "Mommy, reggae brings the sun out!" I couldn't agree more.
