Take Five with The Walkmen... and CMJ

by Sarah Wardrop

We're pretty excited about our first CMJ showcase tonight (7-10pm at The Living Room; stop by or listen live on FUV), but anything called a "music marathon" means there are a LOT of other shows going on too. One is The Walkmen's CMJ set at Terminal 5 on Thursday, so on today's Take Five, we offer up a little flashback to the band's latest visit to Studio A to hang out with Eric Holland. Other good news: The Walkmen have two new songs to check out—either as freebie vinyl at Terminal 5 (if you get there early), non-freebie vinyl set for release in November, or an online listen now.

Take Five with The Alternate Side: Alt-J

by Kara Manning

Clever move on the part of Alt-J to name its debut album An Awesome Wave; the title also neatly sums up the young, Leeds-born band's amazing trajectory for the year.

On top of praise from critics and sold-out gigs, last week the quartet was named one of this year's nominees for the Mercury Prize, the most prestigious music award for UK and Ireland musicians. An Awesome Wave has been out in the UK since May, but it was finally, at long last, released in the States this week, on Canvasback.

Take Five with The Alternate Side: Exitmusic

by Kara Manning

Exitmusic's Aleksa Palladino and Devon Church have forged a profound partnership. The couple came together in a romantic, cinematic way, first meeting on a transcontinental train, and over the course of two albums, the most recent being Passage, they've created an artistic identity which is beautifully beguiling and darkly unsettling.

Today's TAS report on WFUV w/ Dennis Elsas features: Thieving Irons

by Alisa Ali

I've Chosen to feature local band, Thieving Irons on today's TAS report because I am physically unabe to stop listening to their new record, "Behold, This Dreamer!"  I am addicted to it! & I'm having a hard time figuring out which song I like best.  I really do love all of them.  & you know what? That is rare! To like the entire album.  & believe me, if I could take over Dennis' show, I'd just play the whole darn thing. But, I just one pick - so I think I'm going to go with their song, "Poison"
