Newport 2012

Take Five with Jackson Browne

by Rita Houston
Neil Swanson

You heard Jackson Browne's first-ever Newport Folk Festival set during FUV's live Newport coverage last month. It was a very full stage, with Dawes, Jonathan Wilson, Sara Watkins and Tom Morello helping out, and it was just as busy backstage throughout the weekend. That's where I caught up with Jackson, and you can listen to our full conversation below.

We never miss a Newport Folk Festival. Every year there are favorites and surprises, and the unbelievably beautiful setting puts everyone in the best frame of mind.

That means some of the most memorable live performances ever have come out of Newport, and thanks to our teammates at FUV Music, you can hear them on demand.

Newport Folk Festival: Day 3

Sometimes it felt like we were paying as much attention to the weather radar as the music, but in the end, there was sun.

Day 3 at Newport had quite a finale: the skies cleared up, and a mutual admiration society of Dawes, Jonathan Wilson, Tom Morello and Sara Watkins held court on the Fort stage with Jackson Browne as their leader, soaking it all up. "Lawyers, Guns and Money" with a Tom Morello solo... Maybe the first time an electric guitar has been played with teeth at Newport? Probably a tie with "These Days" for my highlight of Jackson's set.

Day 2 at Newport ended with the song "I'm Amazed", and that's also my reaction to the amount of rain that fell to end the day (although I definitely used different words at the time). Lightning and a serious downpour caused the closing My Morning Jacket set to be cut short, but I have to say, lightning may be the perfect lighting for MMJ. I wonder how far Jim James' voice traveled out over the harbor... Hopefully Levon heard his shout out on "It Makes No Difference"!

Newport Folk Festival: Day 1

Day 1 of the Newport Folk Festival actually ended up being Night 1, given the fact that the festival has never (to my knowledge) gone 'til 9:30pm, but what a way to kick it off: Megafaun, Blitzen Trapper and Wilco. Rain and technical difficulties were on the bill too, but that's just how it goes with live, festival broadcasts! Big props to Blitzen Trapper for making the crowd completely forget the rain storm they'd just been through (wet tambourine and all).

Team FUV: Off to Newport & On the radio

It's that time of year, where all roads point to Fort Adams State Park in Newport, Rhode Island, and FUV has a way for you to enjoy the music and avoid the traffic. FUV is headed to the Newport Folk Festival with NPR Music again this year, and not only are we broadcasting live from the sold-out festival all day this Saturday and Sunday—we're kicking things off with a Friday night set by Wilco.
