Pavement reconstruction has begun on Ocean Parkway

State officials believe that a massive plan to repair a stretch of Long Island highway badly damaged by Superstorm Sandy will be repaired by Memorial Day.

Governor Andrew Cuomo, officials from the state Department of Transportation and other agencies say Friday that pavement reconstruction has begun this week on Ocean Parkway.

Ocean Parkway connects to Robert Moses State Park and other beaches along Long Island's southern shore.

The road was closed for nearly a month after the storm and was reopened with lane and speed restrictions on November 24 after emergency repairs.

The plan also calls for replacing five miles of protective sand dunes.
