Some NY Lawmakers Are Making Sure Families Could Put Food On The Table.

A bill could slash nearly $4.1 billion in food stamps, over the next decade.

Some New York lawmakers and anti-hunger advocates are urging congress to fully fund the nation’s food programs.

This comes as the senate is expected to vote on a bill that would slash $4.1 billion dollars in food stamps, over the next decade.

Joel Berg is the Executive Director of the New York City Coalition Against Hunger. He said the cuts would take away millions of meals from New Yorkers.

“You can’t do much else in life unless you’re eating nutritiously. Hungry children can’t learn, hungry workers can’t work, and hungry senior citizens can’t stay independent,” Berg said.

Approximately 190,000 low-income families in New York City rely on food stamps. And Berg said the city has already been experiencing food shortages.

“To further take food away from struggling families is just pouring pain upon pain. It really is a double whammy of suffering,” said Berg.

Berg also says the cuts would affect food-related jobs.

Congress is expected to vote on the so-called Farm Bill next week.
