Bulldogs Ranked Number One For New York City

The American Kennel Club published its annual list of most popular dogs.

From Pelham Bay Park to Battery Park, there is a high chance that you will run into a Bulldog.

The breed was ranked the most popular dog of the year in New York City by The American Kennel Club (AKC). The AKC takes the registration of dog owners and, divided by zip codes, determines which dog is most owned.

Lisa Peterson, a spokesperson for The American Kennel Club, is not surprised by the results. She notes that there has been a rise for both Bulldogs and French Bulldogs, which ranked 5th in NYC, in the city and in general.

"They're easy to care for. They need minimal grooming, they need minimal exercise... they're perfect for that urban lifestyle."

Bred to be companions, the Bulldog pawed its way up on a national level, going from 10th place a few years ago to number five this year. Currently, the Lab holds the top spot for the nation and has been for 23 years.
