Mermaid Parade to Make Waves in Coney Island

The Mermaid Parade is the largest "art parade" in the country.
An annual parade is making waves in Coney Island on Saturday.

After struggling to bounce back from Superstorm Sandy last year, the Mermaid Parade is back in business.

"Coney Island is bright," said Dick Zigun, the parade's founder. "You won't see any devastation. You're just going to enjoy a great parade and be impressed at how far Coney Island has come in the past few years."

He said Coney Island's unique carnival atmosphere helps promote the parade's goal of self-expression.

"Coney Island is a neighborhood where the streets are literally named Mermaid Avenue and Neptune Avenue. Who knows what's going to turn up tomorrow?" said Zigun.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio's kids Dante and Chiara will be the this year's Mermaid King and Queen.
