Bronx Hospital to Host Men's Health Conference

A report from St. Barnabas Hospital finds that one in three men wait as long as possible before seeing a doctor when they're concerned about their health.

According to Dr. Guido Macchiavello, Internal Medicine Site Clinic Director at St. Barnabas, busy work schedules and macho mindsets often cause men to avoid trips to the doctor's office.

"We think that we're invincible," he said.

Dr. Macchiavello said even one checkup can go a long way when it comes to detecting and preventing diseases that commonly affect men, like prostate and colon cancers.

"Check your body weight. Check your blood pressure. It's just as simple as that. It's not invasive. These things can be done but only if you go to the doctor, if you go and seek help," he said.

St. Barnabas is opening a Men's Health Center in October, which will be open in the evenings to accommodate working men unable to schedule appointments during normal business hours.
