A Four-Legged Look at Halloween

Halloween's right around the corner. So last-minute New Yorkers in the holiday spirit will spend the next week buying costumes for themselves, their children, and even their dogs.

A dog donning a Halloween costume was once sure to turn some heads.  But Lisa Borregine with the New York Dog Shop on Manhattan's Upper West Side says what was once a novelty has now become routine for many pet owners.

"It's fun, it's cute, they consider their dogs their childre, you know, like they'd dress their children," she said.

Borregine's boutique sells a wide range of pet costumes, from pumpkins, to unicorns, to ballerinas.  She says people often bring their dogs with them to try things on until they find the perfect match.

And much like humans, Borregine says it appears female dogs enjoy the shopping trip most.

"It's a learned behavior that you dress them up, and you go 'Ooohhh...,' so they know when they're dressed up," she said.  "It's really funny if you watch them, and they know they're cute.  They want the attention."

Dogs even get their own Halloween parades.  Folks who want to show off their dog's trick-or-treat outfit can grab a leash and let their pet strut their stuff at the Tompkins Square Halloween Dog Parade in Alphabet City.  The parade runs for its 24th year tomorrow at noon.
