Bronx Museum Launches Art Exchange With Cuba

The Bronx Museum of Art's recently announced a joint initiative with the National Museum of Fine Arts in Cuba.
The Bronx Museum of Art's calling their exchange initative with the National Museum of Fine Arts in Cuba the most ambitious art exchange between U.S. and Cuban museums in more than 50 years.

The cooperation between the two museums began long before President Obama announced a recent thaw in U.S.-Cuban relations.  That's according to Sergio Bessa with the Bronx Museum of Art.

Bessa says about 100 pieces of artwork from the Bronx Museum will go on display in Havana from May 21-Aug. 16, coinciding with the 12th Havana Biennial. A Cuban exhibition will then come to the Bronx in Spring 2016.

Bessa says its opportunity for the once estranged cultures to make contact.

"And then also have people realize we're not so different from them, and they're not so different from us," he said.  "It's about a shared experience."

Bessa says both exhibitions will present works that address identity, urban life and community issues.
