French Bulldog Becomes NYC's Most Popular Breed

New York City has a new top dog - the French bulldog.

A report from the American Kennel Club says the flat-faced, bat-eared breed was the NYC’s most popular in 2014.

"It's mild-mannered, it gets along well with other dogs,” said Gina Dinardo, American Kennel Club Vice President. “It's easy to care for with its short coat. It doesn't require a lot of exercise, so it adapts to city living very easily.”

The Frenchie displaced its cousin the English bulldog in the top spot.

"They're considered little clowns and lap dogs,” said Franc Midy, founder of New York French Bulldogs breeding program. He said he's seen an increase in demand for the friendly dogs in the past five or six years.

“Their temperament is great, they're not aggressive dogs."

New Yorkers differ a bit from the rest of the nation when it comes to favorite breeds.

"[The French Bulldog is] a beautiful looking dog and New Yorkers are stylish and like to have stylish things with them - including their family pets. They're easy to care for, and New Yorkers are busy," said Dinardo.

Labrador retrievers, German shepherds and golden retrievers round out the top five. The Rottweiler was sixth, replacing the Yorkshire terrier. It dropped to eighth.

The rankings reflect newly registered dogs, mostly puppies.

Nationally, Labs retained the number-one spot for a record 24th year.

The bulldog is fourth, its highest ranking ever. The Frenchie is ninth, breaking into the top 10 for the first time since the decade of the 1910s.
