Talk to Your Baby, Says New Awareness Campaign

Former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and NYC First Lady Chirlane McCray have launched a public awareness campaign called NYC Talk to Your Baby
"Talk to Your Baby" - that what's former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and New York City first lady Chirlane McCray are encouraging parents to do.  They've launched a public awareness campaign in New York City to emphasize the developmental benefits of constantly talking to your infants.

Dr. Erika Landau with Pediatrics of New York says parents who think their newborns can't understand them are quite mistaken.

"These little babies are like sponges," Landau says.  "They will get everything around them, and they will communicate with parents in their own little way."

Dr. Landau says increased communication's especially important for parents facing specific challenges.

"In many families where poverty is an issue, overcrowding is an issue, multiple siblings, single parenting, etc., there is not always enough time to bond with each and every child," Landau says.

Dr. Landau says children can reap a number of benefits from early communication with parents, like improved speech, reading, writing and social skills.
