New York residents may have been overcharged on their water bills.

A new report finds that New York City's high-tech automatic water meters are hitting customers with some huge and unexplained bills.

The report by Public Advocate Bill de Blasio says the new meters "can result in inaccurate readings that overcharge residents, sometimes by tens of thousands of dollars."

De Blasio found some bills were as high as $50,000.

He said in some cases customers were required to pay their bills while they appealed.

The report recommended changes to the billing and collection system.

The Department of Environmental Protection said it has seen no significant change in the number of bill disputes.
