An app to help improve safety on New Jersey's major toll roads.

New Jersey Turnpike Authority officials have announced a new app that they hope will improve safety on the state's major toll roads.

SafeTripNJ ties alerts from the traffic information center in audio form for motorists driving along the New Jersey Turnpike, Garden State Parkway and Atlantic City Expressway. The app is available for iPhones and Androids.

Motorists can select the frequency of alerts and the radius. Officials say the hands-free application should not distract motorists like text alerts.

The authority has also rolled out a new Facebook page where traffic, weather and construction are posted.
