Forthcoming law requires some New York City companies to provide employees with paid sick days.
After blocking paid sick day legislation for nearly three years, City Council Speaker and leading mayoral candidate Christine Quinn reached a compromise with city officials Thursday night.
New York City companies with at least 20 employees will have to alot full-time workers five days of compensated sick leave a year. The mandate will go into effect the spring of 2014.
After 18 months, the legislation will apply to companies with at least 15 employees, according to a report from The New York Times.
Advocates have said the new rule will benefit one million New Yorkers who do not currently get compensated for days they miss work because of illness, according to the Times.
