New phone app captures New York's Times Square countdown

The breathless drama of New York City's Times Square Countdown to the New Year has gone miniature in a new way this year with a free app for electronic devices.

Dubbed "The Times Square Official New Year's Eve Ball App - 2014," the product promises news and updates from the Times Square Ball. It says users can follow "The Ball" each New Year's Eve as it slides into the New Year.

The app provides a link to the official six-hour broadcast program that has been viewed primarily on televisions in the past. It also provides capability to interact with the Times Square Ball on Twitter in real time and the ability to customize to any time zone.

It's available with the latest Android phones and iPhone, iPod touch and iPad.
