Council Plans Used Car Crackdown

Bill would make dealers responsible for recalled cars.
New York City Council members are hoping to protect buyers from purchasing defective used cars. The Committee on Consumer Affairs held a hearing Tuesday on new legislation. It would prohibit used-auto dealers from selling a recalled car without fixing it first.
Cosponsor Council Member Donovan Richards said the bill is simply about better business practices.

"The intent of the bill is to protect consumers while bringing accountability to the industry," he said. "We are not seeking to hurt anyone who is doing the right thing."

The bill would also require dealerships to advertise an "all-inclusive" price on a car to end hidden fees.
