Residents of Newtown are Calling for a Permanent Memorial

Newtown, Connecticut wants a memorial to honor those who lost their lives in the Sandy Hook massacre.

Residents of Newtown, Connecticut are renewing their call for a memorial in light of the second anniversary of the massacre at Sandy Hook elementary school.

Kyle Lyddy's been the chairman of the Sandy Hook Permanent Memorial Commission since it formed in 2013. He says plans for a memorial are still in the ground stages. But Lyddy says he's certain it won't be in a place residents drive by every day...

"Part of our job is to make sure that not every square foot of our town has a memorial," Lyddy said. "We want to make sure that this is a place that is potentially secluded, but is a destination. Some of the words people have thrown at to us are 'hopeful' and 'inspiring.' It's going to mean something else to every individual."

Lyddy says the commission's reached out to the families who lost loved ones in the Sandy Hook shooting for their input.

"We have heard from 18 of the 26 families, some of whom have said it's just too soon to talk about this, so we're obviously granting their wish. Some have opted out for whatever reason, but we're completely respecting that," Lyddy said. "But some people have given us great detail as to what they would like to see. So again, we're listening to everybody."

Lyddy says plans for the Newtown memorial are still in the ground stages. He says he hopes it's finished within the next few years.
