NYC Launching Citywide Gun Buyback Program

New York City will launch a citywide gun buyback program later this year aimed at removing thousands of illegal guns off the street.

City Council Speaker Christine Quinn made the announcement Sunday. The Council and the NYPD each will contribute $150,000 for 10 gun buyback events.

Individuals can surrender handguns with no questions asked.

The program will offer $200 for handguns and assault rifles and a $20 for rifles and shotguns.

City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, Council Member Jessica Lappin, and Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney gathered with advocates today to push for legislation ensuring transparency in advertising for Crisis Pregnancy Centers or CPCs. They say that CPCs use underhanded and dishonest tactics to deter women from having abortions.

Some NYC Middle Schools to Extend Day

3 PM dismissal is going to be a thing of the past for students in select New York City middle schools this September. City Council Speaker Christine Quinn announced a three-year pilot program today  that'll extend the school day another 2.5 hours in 20 high-need middle schools.
