NY Budget Funds for War of 1812 Bicentennial Events
Cuomo leaves under 500 thousand for historical war events.
The state budget is providing funding for upstate New York communities to commemorate the bicentennial of the War of 1812.
The agreement on the spending plan reached this week by Gov. Andrew Cuomo and legislative leaders includes $450,000 for the New York Council for the Humanities.
The organization plans to use some of the funding to provide grants for War of 1812 events to be held in several localities where battles were fought, including Plattsburgh, the Buffalo-Niagara region and
Sackets Harbor on the eastern end of Lake Ontario.
Although state officials had rejected proposals to create a commemorative commission that would have promoted bicentennial events over the next two years, organizers of upcoming War of 1812 activities say they're pleased to see the funding come through.
